The Ergo Stool is not just like any other office stool. The Ergo stool is a different kind of office stool, the kind that can help you to be healthier, more focused and more productive while you work. This office stool is one small part of the worksmarter revolution — a revolution in which we are reimagining office products to suit modern work styles and help people work better.

Office stools aren’t common in offices today. In fact, stools aren’t common anywhere these days. We might see a stool leaning by a bar, or a breakfast stool positioned around a kitchen surface, then there are children’s stools for playtime, so low down to the ground that your knees might hit the floor before your bum hits the seat. Traditionally stools aren’t the most comfortable of furniture. They often offer a precarious kind of seating with a small base, no back, and tall spindly legs to prop them up. However, as the skepticism towards sitting at work grows, the office stool might offer a happy medium between the sedentary and the standing. At least, that’s what our office stool has to offer. With you can find different ways to support your body without straining at a stand or slipping into the sedentary while seated. Here’s what you can do with our office stool.

Wobble

The Autonomous Ergo Stool office stool has a weight circular base allowing for various kinds of movement. This first kind of movement is ‘the wobble.’ At a sitting height, the Ergo Stool can move at an angle of thirty-eight degrees meaning that you can do something called active sitting or dynamic sitting. The idea of dynamic sitting or active sitting is to keep your stop your muscles from becoming tight during long periods of sitting. Instead of sitting passively, (ie. letting your chair take all of your body weight for most of the day) and exercising your muscles you can keep them exercised and healthy and improve circulation and muscle strength.

For example, when using the Ergo stool office stool, by moving your weight forward and backward or side to side you can create a slight wobble or wiggle motion. This engages your core, leg and back muscles and keep your muscles loose and exercised. When engaging in active or dynamic sitting you are also more likely to retain a healthy posture, simply through the act of being more aware of your body and it’s position.

Circles

The Ergo Stool office stool has a circular base allowing for 360-degree rotation. This means that beyond the ‘wobble’ or wiggle motion, you can also move in concentric circles to exercise your hips and give your back and leg muscles more dynamic movement. The best way to use this circular movement with your office stool is to get into a regular repetitive movement and then repeat. You can either alternate in right to left movement or move in one direction for a short period and then move in the opposite direction. Either, way it’s good to get a balance of exercising in both directions overall.

Lean

It isn’t always healthy or productive to wobble all day. Whilst always effective in short bursts, some may find it either or both distracting and tiring for long periods. As such, there are plenty of other ways to use your office stool to be healthy at the office. For example, you kind try different kinds of leaning. If you want to work from a more static position or take a break from movement you can also us the office stool to learn from a sitting position.

By pushing the office stool further back from the desk and pulling your weight forward you can position the office stool at an angle from your body. In this position, your knees can be at a wider angle from the office stool and the office stool at a wider angle from your feet. This position alleviates the pressure on your hips and distributes the weight across your leg and back muscles. By engaging these muscles you also prevent them from becoming stiff.

If you start to feel stiff in this position you can move the base of the office stool further away or closer to your feet or move your legs further or closer from the base to create different angles and workout different muscles

Varied heights

One other way to work out different muscles and change your position to prevent your body from becoming stiff is to change the height of your office stool.

The Ergo Stool office stool is adjustable in height meaning it is perfect when paired with a varidesk or sit to stand desk. At it’s lowest height it has regular seated height of 24 inches whilst at it’s the highest height it is at an extended height of 34 inches. It is easy to change between these heights: by simply pushing down on the cushioned seat of the office stool you will release the height lock and the seat base will slide easily higher and lower. Once you find a height that suits your needs, you simply push down on the cushioned seat once more to lock it into place.

At different heights both wobbling and leaning will engage different muscle groups. The higher the office stool or the greater the angle between your feet and the base, the more weight you will be putting on your legs and other muscles making for more strenuous activity. As such, it can be better to start the day at a higher height and move to a lower height when you get tired or need a break.

This office stool is also great for leaning at a standing height desk. If you have a standing desk and spend most of your day at a standing height, you can use this office stool to lean against, taking a small amount of weight of your feet and also exercising your back and core muscles to prevent you from becoming too stiff.

Posture

Because the Ergo Stool office stool does not have a back or arm support, it encourages you to maintain good posture. Unlike sitting in an ordinary ergonomic chair, or any, when sitting on an office stool your upper body weight falls on your core muscles, back muscles, and even your legs. However, although the Ergo stool prevents sedentary working it doesn’t ensure you will have great posture, it can still be easy to fall into a slump. In order to achieve great posture, you need to be aware of your stature and actively maintain a good stance. What the office stool does do, is make you more aware of your body, more attuned to your stance and therefore more aware of your posture. If you find yourself in a slumped position, you can always change the height or position of the office stool to put different muscles to work and get your posture back on track.

Who knew an office stool could allow you to do so much? This is an office stool which can really help you break out of sedentary work habits and experiment with different ways of working.

Where to start

Never had a standing desk or varidesk? An Ergo Stool office stool could be a good way to experiment with new ways of working with your existing desk. Using your regular sitting desk, try active sitting and some of the movements described above and see what difference it makes to your body and your productivity.

Just got a standing desk and don’t know where to start? With an Ergo Stool office stool you can make a gentle transition from sitting all day to using different heights to distribute your weight, get your core muscles working and keep you active when sitting, standing and everywhere in between.

Never tried active sitting? Just like adjusting to a standing desk adjusting to an Ergo stool office stool can take some getting used to. Start by trying some small repetitive exercises for an hour or so at a time. Once you get into the rhythm of it try some more complicated movements, try active sitting for long periods or try using a range of different movements to really get into the swing of it.

Once you’ve been using active sitting, dynamic sitting or working from different heights, notice the ways your body and your mind feel different while you work. Incorporating standing or active sitting into your ritual for just a few hours a day can significantly enhance your circulation to make you more focused, efficient and energetic. Yet perhaps the biggest benefit to working in different ways is in terms of wellbeing. Having a choice over the way we work, gives us a sense of Autonomy over our work environment. Having Autonomy makes us feel less tethered to our desks. It helps us to break up the day and use different workstyles depending on our mood. We’re confident that with our Ergo Stool office stool you’ll feel less distracted, will be less focused on watching the clock and be more productive overall.
