Celebrating hardworking men and women who make America thrive, and our continued fight to elect Democrats who support them

This Monday isn’t just about throwing hot dogs and burgers on the grill. On Labor Day, we honor the working people in America. We honor those who have fought hard to secure and preserve protections for working families. They build up our country and make our economy stronger every day. We all know this: Republicans are fighting to dismantle unions, the very institutions that were instrumental creating an American middle class and in giving laborers the respect, treatment, and dignity they deserve.

As Democrats, we know that labor unions are the backbone of the American workforce and that our fight for safety and equality in the workplace would not be possible without them. Whether it’s equal pay, raising the minimum wage, or paid family leave, labor unions have been and continue to be on the front lines fighting for American families.

Here in New Hampshire, Governor Sununu has steadily worked to dismantle organized labor. One of his first priorities as governor was trying to push through so called “Right –to-Work” legislation, which was summarily shot down by a bipartisan group of legislators.

But that didn’t stop Sununu who then went on to refuse to renew state workers’ contract for almost 300 days, forcing them to go to work throughout the winter with old supplies and worn out boots. The holdup on the contract? Sununu didn’t want to give them a 3% raise even though on his first day in office Sununu gave himself a 20% raise over his predecessor Senator Hassan.

Monday is a day of celebration. However, we must not forget our collective responsibility to stand up for workers’ rights in the face of Sununu’s attacks. One of the best ways we can do that is to get to work and vote Sununu out of office and elect Democrats who will defend unions and fight for working families.

This Labor Day Weekend, we have an opportunity to show again our love for hard working Americans and the Unions that champion them. So let’s go out and knock on doors, walk in parades, and register people to vote! Let’s spread the message that Unions still work for the average American. Union members work every day to support our communities and that is why it is so important to support them with our vote!

Happy Labor Day and onward to victory!
