A Statement of Solidarity

We #StandWithChanda — to do her work as a scientist and speak her mind without fear of retribution. We support her and affirm our desire for a day when academics of color can work without being constantly harrassed, attacked, marginalized, and erased. We recognize the need for physicists, astronomers, and the academy to stand with Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein against this cheap act of intimidation.

“Dr. Prescod-Weinstein is a vital member of our community, both in terms of the fantastic science she does and in terms of her life-long fight for diversity and inclusion in our field and in our society. It’s horrifying to see this blatant attack against her, and it should be removed from the website immediately. All those associated with the post should be ashamed of their behavior.”

Dr Chanda Prescod-Weinstein has committed a great deal of energy and unpaid labour to promote excellence and inclusion in the fields of astronomy and physics. An attack on her professional character due to her activism to increase awareness of racism and other forms of discrimination in science is an inexcusable form of unethical journalism. The scientific community should rally behind Dr Prescod-Weinstein and lift up her scholarship and tireless service to improve diversity in research.”

”As a graduate student in Ecology I have heard the “we don’t have this problem” and “has anything ever been reported?” specifically in relation to issues of harassment. I believe that is wrongheaded and leaves a door open that we should be actively barring. So, I stand with Chanda and many others for speaking truths, raising awareness, and encouraging me to apply that training as a scientist to *think* like a scientist. The evidence is there, we only need to look.”
