I am shocked by this cultural difference
One typical Monday evening, I was helping my British boyfriend clean his kitchen after dinner. He was washing the dishes and I was drying and putting them away. I took a look at the wet dishes in the dish rack and they were covered in soap suds!
“I think you forgot to wash off the dishes,” I said innocently enough.
“What do you mean?” He responded confused as we both looked at the dishes. Not one, but all, of the dishes were dripping in soap.
My boyfriend agreed that it was a bit gross and would try to rinse them off more in the future.
I thought this was a one-off event; a weird quirk of my boyfriend’s. I didn’t think much more of it until a woman in an expat Facebook group posted a photo of a pile of soap covered dishes. She didn’t even caption the photo but everyone knew what she was implying. Her British husband apparently doesn’t wash off his dishes either and suddenly many women in the group were sharing their similar stories.
As we delve deeper into the topic, we concluded that it wasn’t just British men who aren’t the best dish washers but also British mother-in-laws and other family members too. Shocked by these revelations, we started to determine what is it about British culture that causes this…
