10 Takeaways from the Marquette Digital Summit

1. How Laughlin Constable uses social media for insight

At the Marquette Digital Summit, Laughlin Constable’s Mark Carlson gave a speech on using emotion and passion in the marketing and advertising field. He mentioned how social media can be very useful in gaining insight on their target. When people use social media they tell people a lot about themselves and Laughlin Constable uses that when targeting their consumer for an accurate insight on them.

2. Millenials are bringing social media to new heights

When Spotify came to talk at the Marquette Digital Summit, they talked about how the millennial generation is soundtracking their lives. They do this by making playlists for just about anything and any mood that they are in. This is interesting because Spotify can now learn a lot about the user. This use of consumer information can help advertisers on Spotify reach who they want to reach.

3. Spotify is the way to listen to music

At the Marquette Digital Summit a Twitter poll was taken to gage how many people use Spotify. This poll shows that more than any other music streaming app or music medium Spotify is the most used. This is a good poll because it gages the audience at that time, and gives an accurate sample of what is going on in the greater population.

4. Consumer and agency trust and loyalty

Gartner Inc. is a firm that uses technology for research for advertising companies. They use their technology to gather statistics about the consumer in order to make it easier for ad companies like Laughlin Constable and BVK to narrow their target.

5. How advertisers need to tell stories

An example in how advertisers tell good stories is BVK’s get checked Omaha campaign. This was a campaign that was designed to raise awareness about STD’s in Omaha, which has the highest rate of STD’s in the country. This campaign told a story without making it too uncomfortable in the very conservative state of Nebraska.

6. Solving problems with your smart phone

Google is an extremely useful tool in today’s society. If you are trying to solve any house hold problem if you have a smartphone or any other mobile device you can use that device and Google to figure out the solution in minimal time.

Marquette is joining in on the music streaming app Spotify. They have a playlist on Spotify that they made and is open to any Spotify user. Marquette is taking a big step in joining the social media and mobile world by connecting to their students through mediums in which they use.

8. Staying ethical in marketing and advertising

In Mark Carlson, of Laughlin Constable, he stressed the importance of trying not to manipulate and deceive our consumers, but rather help them. This is a major theme in their campaigns such as their Aurora Health Care campaign as well as many others.

1. Conferences = networking opportunity

Hundreds of students and professionals rubbed elbows at the Digital Summit, including participants from Laughlin Constable, Spotify, Google, Microsoft and more. Some Marquette students had the opportunity to get up close with speakers as student ambassadors by greeting them and introducing them. But anyone has the opportunity to network at a conference like the Digital Summit by sitting at a lunch table where you don’t know anyone, exchanging business cards and then following up with a LinkedIn connection or an email. You never know where it might lead.

2. Keep personality and character in brands

Laughlin Constable practices what they preach by keeping personality in brands. For example, they personalized the face of cancer in a campaign for Aurora, they’re proud of their local roots by transforming a concession stand into a mock super club, they’re unafraid to tell it like it is when it comes to beer, socializing and college student.
