They’re still counting votes, and Trump’s total is now higher than Romney’s. But your point still holds. Clinton’s is much lower than Obama 2012, which itself was millions lower than Obama 2008. Trump didn’t win over voters; but Clinton didn’t hold on to Obama voters.

But just because Trump got a similar number of votes as Romney doesn’t mean the breakdown was the same. For example, when I went through the exit polls (link below if you’re curious), there was a clear split in education levels and race.

Obama won among Americans without a college degree, but Trump won that group. And he did it because of less educated white Americans. Hillary carried nonwhites without a college degree 75–20, but Trump won whites without a college degree 67–28.
