Ben, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece of yours. When you suggest that our conception of purposeful language should not be limited to that which is descriptive or analytic, I am reminded of the difficulty many people have with the creation story. All to often critics on both sides of the evolution/7 Day debate appear preoccupied with the analytical bias. In limiting themselves to the question, “Is this a correct description of the creation process,” they miss out on the poetic aspect of the opening chapters of Genesis and the (sentence type 4) possibility that, ‘A sentence may not be a description at all, but still identify a fact’. This fact being that God created and that He saw this creation to be Good.
