Review: “Evil Dead Rise”

Evil Dead has been a staple franchise within the horror genre because of what it did in the original trilogy led by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. That trilogy also spawned a 2013 spinoff led by Fede Alvarez which was rather successful even despite being the first Evil Dead movie in over twenty years. Later in 2015, the Raimi brothers developed a television series that continued the exploits of Ash Williams (Campbell) against the Evil Dead. Much like the 2013 spinoff/remake, whatever you’d like to label it, Rise operates similarly as it is a separate story within the universe. Much like the 2013 version, Rise delivers on the promise of gore and blood while not being as comical as the original trilogy. Those that struggle with gore will probably have a hard time watching this film, but horror fans alike will have plenty to sink their teeth into.

The plot follows a family that live in a beaten down apartment complex led by single mother Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland). Ellie had lost her husband who skipped out on her and their three children leaving her struggling to make ends meet while her sister, Beth (Lily Sullivan) was off working with a band. Ellie is even more distraught knowing that they can no longer live in their apartment as it is being destroyed and she will struggle to find a new place for her and her children.
