I have a question that comes from being in a similar situation multiple times. I’m a former paramedic and still an EMT. I share your concern for people who need emergency medical help. I cannot drive past a situation where I see people who are injured and not getting help, so I completely get that point.

However, as I thought about your story, I can’t help wondering what you thought the arrested man needed from you. What raised your concern? You mention the psychological issues, but I’m not sure what immediate medical care would be needed.

It certainly has frustrated me when cops tell me they don’t want me to help an injured person they have in custody — watching and doing nothing sucks. But a man handcuffed and muttering to himself doesn’t sound to me like someone who is in need of urgent medical help. Can you clarify?
