How to Start a Golf League (And What I Learned From It)

Every Tuesday during the summer, I get together with 15 of my dude friends and we play golf. We also drink beer, but that’s another blog post.

Shortly after graduating college, we all decided that spending the workweek in a cubicle or on the couch wasn’t going to cut it. We needed fresh air. We needed camaraderie. We needed to play golf. So we started brainstorming.

Should we join an existing golf league? Nope, not enough room.

Should we ask a golf course if they can create a league for us? Nope, too expensive.

Instead, we decided to start our own golf league. For those who associate the word “boring” with “golf”, I’m not going to bore you with the details of how we started the league. In short, we scheduled the tee times on our own, never showed up late, kept track of our own scores, treated the course and workers with respect, and had a blast doing it.

When the golf course found out that we started our own league, they waived the additional fees because we were such good customers. They even reserved tee times for us. Now we all have a positive experience to look forward to every week.

It’s amazing what you can create when you don’t ask to join, don’t ask for permission, consistently show up, treat people with respect, and have fun.
