Rocki joins Onion’s IoT Kickstarter with Music SDK

Going Opensource IoT Music & Audio Innovation for Devs & Makers

IoT is expected to grow from 6 billion to 27 billion connected devices by 2025. Some of these are the connected speakers. You know, like Sonos, or smart ones like Amazon Echo with AI over cloud built-in.

Audio is a identity & diversity

Speakers come in all kinds of style, and even different sound. It’s almost an extension of our personal branding — whether you’re using a premium brand or you go for quality with no frills, it’s a personal choice. So how will the vast & diverse community of manufacturers and independent makers engage technology & IoT integrating into audio? Wouldn’t it be awesome if IoT technology, both hard & soft, are easily accessible and that there’s a thriving community of innovators?

Software is the magic

So, what next? what happens when we’ve got a world full of connected audio? What’s the true magical value that will come out of that “connectedness”. Sure, playing music remotely and wirelessly is cool, and practical. And sure, the novelty of talking to your speaker to order a Uber is fun, but that novelty soon wears off. Besides, none of these uses actually bring out the real value “connectedness”. There are definitely much ideas and application prototyping going around — enjoying music together, social music creation, music/artists discovery & recommendations thanks to the big data generated, blockchain … the true magic is in building the software that creates the real value of “connectedness” user scenarios.

Community and fun is the X-factor

And that’s why opensource community creates some of the most awesome innovations. Today some call it crowdsourcing innovation. All I know is that the best ideas often comes out of nowhere, while you’re kidding around with your mates on- or offline.

Onion the IoT Innovation Platform x Rocki Music SDK

When we had the opportunity to go opensource & support community build form via a collaboration with Onion & Rocki, it was a no-brainer — of course! Onion’s IoT Invention Platform is very accessible, and is great for both hardware and software — lots of different hardware expansion combination possible, and a cool cloud-based control panel of software development, plus an awesome community. Ideal scenario to plant plant our Rocki music streaming experience into an SDK to power devs and makers, and seed the next wave of invention, soft and hard.

Let’s go opensource, build and make together.
