8 Life Lessons We Can All Learn From Bridget Jones

Big pant days are allowed :-)

It’s hard to believe it but it is 15 years since Bridget Jones tottered here way onto the screen with her short skirts and her bunny outfits.

She stole our hearts in the way that she told her story, with the heartbreak, self doubt and crisis of confidence that we all feel.

She gave all women hope that you don’t need to be PERFECT to live a life to the full and find your true love.

At the time I was about to get married and such a different person to who I am now. Just in the fact she was truly herself full of doubt and disappointment in herself sometimes.

She gave all women hope that you don’t need to be PERFECT to love. Despite her unique character, big pants and sometimes-doubtful judgment we loved her anyway. In fact I loved her more for it. I could truly empathise with this curvy, genuine and loveable lady.

And recently I went with my mum and dad. Bridgette is now a hot shot in TV, still single and pregnant. I loved her even more as my want to be a mum is still so strong.

So for all of us who have LOVED Bridgette this week I pay homage to this woman who shaped our lives. Who reminder us it’s okay to not always be okay, to have big pant days and that you can be perfectly YOU. You don’t need to be stick thin or watch what you say to be happy.

From my heart for that THANK YOU Bridgette Jones and the amazing Renee Zellweger who bought her to life with some humor and love. `

So here’s my top 8 Life Lessons from the very fabulous Ms Jones.

8 Life Lessons from Bridget Jones

1) Follow what makes you happy

Spend time to know what you truly want and follow what makes you happy. You don’t need to go on the expensive skiing trip or go to couply dinner parties if that doesn’t make you happy. Chose dancing and singing to Chaka Khan if that makes you smile.

2) Surround yourself with those who lift you up.

Have a great group round you to lift you up. Those friends like Bridgette has who truly accept and LOVE her as she is. Plus a dad that she dotes and an overbearing mum we can all probably empathise with.

3) The Truth Will Set You Free

Bridgette is always truthful even when she’s scared and hurting. When she is sacked from her job she goes with honesty.

“I’ve got to leave my job because I shagged my boss.”

4) Appreciate and love yourself

Bridgette might find it hard to love and appreciate herself at times. But she will stands firm for herself and knows that she’s worth MORE.

Daniel Cleaver: Come on Bridget, we belong together — you, me, poor little skirt. If I can’t make it with you then I can’t make it with anyone.

Bridget: That’s not a good enough offer for me.

5) Always leave people more happy than you meet them

Even when in prison, in a bunny outfit or wearing a purple bridesmaid dress Bridgette always leaves others feeling happier. This is a gift, she meets them where they are and shares her magic, whether that’s teaching Madonna songs or getting drunk at the work karaoke.

6) Keep a journal

The whole series is based on Bridgette and her journal. She bravely writes down what she thinks and feels. The process of writing down means that she can process who she feels and see what’s true and not true.

7) Big pant days are okay

You will have days when you don’t feel great and the big pants will come out. Let yourself be and listen to what you need. If that’s a day relaxing and slowing down so be it. Get in the bath, listen to music whatever you feel you need.

8) Trust that you are ENOUGH … just the way you are

Just by the love we all have for the Bridgette Jones, we all should see it is proof that you don’t need to be perfect to be happy just be beautifully YOU.

“But the thing is, um, what I’m trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much.

Just as you are.”

So thank you Miss Jones for helping to spread the message to the World “You are ENOUGH. Just as YOU are.”
