Our Global Village

Today our village has gone from being only local, to being global as well. This is thanks to new technologies and media outlets that have arisen in the past 20 years.

Marshall McLuhan described the instant accessibility of information and news to that of a constantly beating tribal drum. What McLuhan means by this is that as soon as news breaks, we are all able to access the story and know what is happening all over the world, much like the way the tribal drum beats to let people know what is happening.

Our global village while geographically is incredibly spread out and large, digitally it is very close and small. We are able to communicate with people in different time zones and cultures, we are even able to communicate with people who speak an entirely different language to us thanks to online translation services.

Personally I think the global village is wonderful and intimidating all at the same time. If I had to describe what our global village looks like I would say it would look like a tangled mess of wires. This is because each person contributes to the village and we are all trying to navigate it. Sometimes we get lost in the tangle, and sometimes we find our way for a while.
