You don’t need the influence of drugs to come up with such images. Humans have, throughout all history, seen faces and animals where they don’t exist — the man in the moon, the hunter in the stars, a bunny in the clouds, a monster in the night’s shadows. Humans are programmed to be hyper-alert to faces, and in particular eyes, because they are important to us, evolutionarily speaking. A baby will learn to focus on facial features before anything else. These AI systems are trained on photos that people have submitted to the internet — mostly photos of animals and people. So it’s no surprise that they also concoct them out of shadows. They are only doing as people do! (PS surely those are eyes, not spiders…)
