Janet Frederick and her daughter Deannee Santiago are the masterminds behind the all-natural, Black-owned skincare company, Lulu’s Holistics. For four years now, the mother and daughter team have been scaling the business, creating new products and opportunities along the way. They’ve come a long way since their overnight success, and it doesn’t look like they have plans of slowing down anytime soon.

The company’s name comes from a childhood nickname Janet’s mother gave her, which originated from the cartoon The Little Lulu Show. Making that the name of their brand was a touching tribute to her mother and herself, when looking at it through the eyes of Deannee. With a history behind the name like that, it’s no surprise that the pair value family and relationships greatly.

Across each of their three physical store locations and two warehouses, Lulu’s Holistics has 30 employees, all of whom are treated like family. A company can function much better when there’s mutual respect and kindness in the environment, and that’s exactly how Janet and Deannee have been running things.

Lulu’s Holistics is home to a vast range of products, ranging from body butters to facial serums. And the best part is that every single item for sale by the company is safe for every member of the family, ranging from baby to elder, so long as peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary products are kept away from small children. Each ingredient is 100% natural, meaning there aren’t any harsh chemicals to damage the skin or environment over time.

Some examples of the products they offer include their Yoni line, which includes a scrub, serum, and pH balancing treatment. They’re targeted toward women and are perfect for any spots the customer may deem unacceptable. The serum and scrub are specifically able to lighten discoloration and scars, remove ingrown hairs, and help with razor bumps.

As women of color, Janet and Deannee know exactly what someone with similar hair and skin needs is looking for, so they’ve done a great job at providing just that. The duo are always looking to go above and beyond with their company, and the pandemic has done a good job at highlighting just how far they’re willing to go for customers.

When the pandemic first happened, they began sending out a number of free gifts with orders. This included hand sanitizer, face masks, benefit shots that included ginger and health boosts, and sea moss, which is a great way to get mucus out of one’s system. Giving back to the community is a top priority, and the mother-daughter duo stress the importance of doing so.

The two also practice philanthropy by helping out in Jamaica, where they sponsor schools to bring awareness to autism. This work has benefitted many, and it’s inspiring to see successful entrepreneurs offering a helping hand to those who may need it. Lulu’s Holistics has granted Janet and Deannee the opportunity to give back, and they’ve never shied away from taking it.

Since their start, the mother and daughter have come a long way, and they don’t have plans of slowing down any time soon. More products are constantly in the works, but as of now, there’s extra focus on opening two new locations in the Bronx and Queens. Janet and Deannee are also hoping to soon incorporate marijuana into their company and have even been testing out CBD products.

Updates on everything regarding Lulu’s Holistics can be found on their Instagram, where they consistently post for their 403,000+ followers about products and news. As Janet and Deannee continue scaling their company, we wish them nothing but the best moving forward.
