Contracts

Contracts are important for several reasons, and although they don’t necessarily need to be in one centralized document, keeping them straightforward and all in one place is a big help. Contracts of all kinds should come with set and known expectations from both the client and yourself, and it’s important that the client is given enough time to fully read and understand the contract before signing it. All parties involved should be listed in a contract, and generally up front — and the contracts need to be signed by those involved.

It’s important to remember that an artist owns his or her own work, this is where releases come in handy. Third-party contract work still belongs to you, so making sure you have a contract in place when outsourcing tasks is important. There are also several different types of licenses which all have different intentions — a print release won’t work for business or marketing material, for example, so it’s important to ask the client what they intend to do with the photographs.
