Professional Practice: Group Tutorial 3 (09/03/16)
I mainly discussed in this tutorial about who would want my work? How would I get my work out there and the plans I have other than creating my own personal work.
Making contact with people:
- Design agency’s
- Creating work for exhibition (find people who want to do the same and do group work/ exhibition)
- Sarah Chapman- Peninsula Arts
- Plymouth art centre
- Wondering bears
- Fenik Spacek (young artists/collectives/local curators/top end)
- Cast (Contemporary space)
- Local galleries and studios/ pop up space
Other things to keep in mind:
- Culture of being amerced in the arts/photo world.
- Considering wider professional opportunities.
- Who would I show my portfolio to?
- Where are images needed and can I provide them?
- How do I make a living?
- What I want to do and how other do it.
- Own work- starting a business?
- Building a network- start small and work way up.
- Meeting new people/ Getting my name out there.
- Charity work (name making.)
- Working with locals (coffee shop/matt snacks etc.)
- Be professional.
- What type of assistant: photographer/studio/curator?
- Extra money (photo labs/stores & self-publishing.)
- Photographic editor- selecting and editing images for publications.
- Exhibitions>Curator/ working with gallery’s.
- Collaborations (Play writers/theatres/ commissioners.)
Plan
- Work full time to being with in a photo lab/ photographic store to get money behind me to fund projects and living costs. Then potentially part time to spend more time on photographic projects and to work elsewhere such as assisting/gallery work/ volunteer/ charity & community projects/ travel (All whilst making my own work.)
- Entre awards and competitions when working on personal work (self-publish, exhibit and collaborate.)
- Assist either previous photographers I have worked with or approach new people (AOP-Case studies) If not a photographer within a studio or with a curator to experience a new path within the industry and gain a wider knowledge of these areas.
- Work in a gallery (experience shows and visit exhibitions and gallery’s to gain experience and widen knowledge.)
- Later on potential interest to work with a photo agency (Spoke to Anna from Panos- mentioned to get in touch with Bristol based agent always looking for new artists.)
