Ours was never
a whirlwind romance
it was something
that moved quietly
in the silence of souls
and it made me feel
like I could be whole

I loved you from afar
though you were close
but just across
a crowded room
and we talked
late at night over drinks
when everyone had gone

You made me realize
that the past is gone
and you a part of that past
are also gone now
leaving me here alone

I remembered you
dreamed of you
before I met you
even your tattoo

But I didn’t know
how much you
loved someone else
before I met you
and that you would never
want to hold me close
it took time to
figure out
