Ryan Holiday’s The Daily Stoic. If you value your mental health, you’ll read it. Nicole Schlinger

On a regular day … you might not need stoic wisdom from Marcus Aurelius or Seneca or Epictetus.

Well, you probably do. You just don’t realize it yet.

Stoics have gotten a bad rap over the centuries. Instead of being perceived as thoughtful and introspective, they are viewed as cold and unfeeling.

Stoicism was meant to be the opposite of that.

Stoicism is the philosophy for those who are engaged in public life, who are in the arena.

It is a way through all of the noise and turmoil to determine what is in your control and what is not, and to act accordingly.

What I like about this book, particularly, is the lessons and anecdotes are short. You are only meant to read one a day, and then spend some time contemplating on it. However, I found that the related messages seem to lend themselves to reading in groups of 3 or 4.

Unlike some of the action adventure reads … The Daily Stoic is the kind of book you have to read to experience. Either you get it or you don’t.

And that, my friends, is out of my reasoned choice.

Which is what I learned from Stoicism.

Yes, this is the SAME Ryan Holiday who wrote Conspiracy, featured in a previous Nicole Schlinger book review … which you can click HERE to read.
