We all hate phone scams, right? We might even get frustrated and yell at the scammer on the other end. But have you ever stopped to wonder, “How could someone actually do this as a job?”

The truth is, for many, phone scamming isn’t a “job” at all. It’s a horrifying reality of modern-day slavery.

Lured by false promises of legitimate work, individuals — often from Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, and even as far as Africa — travel to Cambodia, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmarish reality.

Stripped of their passports they are forced into scamming others.

Shockingly, the UN estimates over 220,000 individuals are currently trapped in forced scamming operations across Cambodia and Myanmar.
