This trip back to India from Australia made me of the word Dilli that’s not how I for sure call Delhi, but while listening to song from Dilli-6 (Delhi-6) movie it clicked me~~

Dilli is a Hindi word I often call Delhi as, even modern name Delhi sounds great, at times speaking it as Dilli looks good but typical of rural regions as I hear it as Dilli more from rural side people from North India and Delhi from urban side people. It refers to as “Dilli” the capital of the Mugal Saltunate” as I heard it in the bollywood movie Jodha Akbar.

Well I live in the best part and the only part of Delhi I love the most, that is South Delhi~~ South Delhi is the most nice part of National Capital Region of Delhi

There is a famous Bollywood song that sings Delhi as ‘Dili hain Dilwalo ki” means Delhi belongs to people of hearts. Here,

Full Video: Dilli-6 | Delhi 6 | Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor is a bollywood movie that also refers to name of Delhi as Dilli in this youtube link of its trailor here, and speaks of Delhi sound as Dilli! So let us see what history says about Delhi name, Delhi or Dilli ?

As per the internet the old name of Delhi was Indraprastha, as written in 400 BCE Sanskrit Epic Mahabharata, it was the place where the great Pandavas used to live, their fort as per some texts were in Delhi. The river Yamuna which flows in other end of Delhi, has lot of references in history as well, this river flows nicely near the Taj Mahal, which is a symbol of love made by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Ruler (Mughal King Barber invaded India long back), looks like white marble palace, where Mumtaj Mahal (Shah Jahan nominated her name ‘Malika-i-Jahan’ (“Queen of the World”) is entombed. So, coming back to Delhi from with the river Yamuna that flows from Taj Mahal to Delhi, this river is not in a good state now, and the water used to be so bad however clean water came to Yamuna last year water level in Yamuna raised above safe levels and water spilled in Delhi…its fine this year, lets see how it goes in this moonson~~~~

As per some internet sources, there are texts in Indo-Aryan languages where it is referred that — Abhi Dilli dur hain. Word dil also means heart and in Hindi Delhi sounds like dili in English it sounds as Delhi, some internet references refer to this place as gateway to the Gangetic Plain, some reference of name of city comes from a King Dilu who built a city at this location at 50 BC and named it after him.

Another reference on Wikipedia says in texts in Indo-Aryan language, says “Dillī pānī tarse (आस-पास बरसे, दिल्ली पानी तरसे )” meaning “It pours all around, while Delhi lies parched”.”

So if we read the hindi words used to write Delhi its,

“दिल्ली” , note Hindi and Sanskrit share mostly same alphabets, as this reference was in Indo-Aryan language, nothing more is mentioned on Wikipedia page about details of this Indo-Aryan language, was it Sanskrit?

The above words are spoken as the sound Dilli not Delhi, but Delhi sounds great too!

As per wikipedia [1], “The form Delhi, spelled in the Latin script with the h following the l, originated under colonial rule and is an alternation of the spelling based on the Urdu name of the city”

So the sound h was there — It sounds great Delhi or Dilli, I am used to saying it both ways Dilli or Delhi. Delhi is however the more modern way of speaking as most people in urban speaks of heart of India as New Delhi only!!

So, here was a conquest in past to know if its Delhi or Dilli, the capital and the heart of this place~~~~
