The Goodness of God

“Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; bring an offering and come before Him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”

Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for He comes to judge the earth. Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!” Then all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord.”

1 Chronicles 16:29–36 ESV

I was pondering on 1 Chron. 16:34 this morning. We experienced so much hurt and disappointments in the world, but can we blame God for it? We look to God for answers and direction in our daily walk with Him. As born-again Christians we know that nothing is impossible with God. Without a doubt; God is good!

My wife hurt her back many years ago. She suffers from sciatica ever since. We trusted God for healing, and many people prayed for her throughout the years. And yet the healing we seek is eluding her. So after asking, praying, even begging God many times for her healing and deliverance, there is no thread of improvement. One becomes disappointed and disillusioned.

Why is God silent on this matter?

Suddenly I’m made aware of this Scripture:

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” …

So: What is our level of commitment and engagement with Him? Can we even blame Him for our perceived lack of a response? We did all the right things we know and could: Confessed our sins and those of our previous generations many times over. We prayed scripture after scripture we think could speak into her situation.

On other occasions we looked away from ourselves and prayed for the needs of others. We have giving hearts and have never fallen short of serving the needs of others. Yet he question remains: What more must we do? Suddenly the Holy Spirit reminds me: “Nothing! remain obedient and persevere following in His footsteps”.

God made us in His image, and to His likeness. He desires intimacy with us. We are the only created beings in His own image and likeness, created for His pleasure. Look at this Scripture: “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth”. Deut. 7:6.

I am also reminded of a situation where Paul asked God thrice to remove a “thorn from his flesh”. God’s response? “My grace is sufficient for you”. 2 Cor. 12:9.

Jesus made a profound statement in the New Testament, so much so that 70 disciples He appointed deserted Him. He then asked the 12, His closest followers, a very hard question:

“Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life…

(Read the entire discussion in John 6:51–68).

In conclusion: Shall we stop asking? No! Can we stop believing? No! Can we stop following Him? No! Why? This road is not an easy one. He never promised us a smooth ride, only a glorious destination.
