Nik Belcevich, a Los Angeles film producer, has completed three independent films. As a producer, Nik Belcevich’s job is similar to that of a project manager: most of his work involves coordinating the people, financing, and activities involved with making a film.

The role of the producer depends on the type of film being made and its complexity. For example, larger productions might include an executive producer who is primarily responsible to raise financing for the film. Without an executive producer, a producer must secure financing and draft a budget to pay for expenses.

An important job of the producer is to conceptualize the premise of a film. If using another person’s idea, the producer is responsible for securing the rights to the narrative.

Once the story has been conceptualized and rights secured, the producer hires a writer to draft a script, working with the writer through the development process. The producer also hires the creative team, which includes the crew, director, and cast.

Once these activities have been completed, the producer is involved in the everyday operations of filming and in post-production. He or she works with the editor, composer, and visual effects supervisor to craft the film to perfection. The producer is also involved with marketing and distribution of the film.
