DSC UAD Participant Created AR Project to Help Student in Learning Biology
A DSC UAD participant named Firman Miftahul Hidayat, the student of Information Systems Department 2015, has created an augmented reality (AR) project to help high school students in learning biology, especially about virus. He built this project to complete his internship task in BalaiTekKomDik Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta.
BalaiTekKomDik Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta is a government organization in Indonesia. They work in education and technology areas. They build methodologies and anything that can help supporting the education (using IT) in Indonesia, especially in Special Region of Yogyakarta province.
One of the problem they faced is about the availability of facilities in schools. There are some senior high school in Yogyakarta that do not have microscope because it is too expensive to buy, but actually the students really need it to learn. For this case, there is a lesson about virus that the student of first year should learn. Without microscope they can learn about it perfectly. As the solution, Firman had an idea to build something that can be displayed looks alike when we look at the virus through the microscope. Then he decided to build AR project as the learning media about virus.
“Building AR project is not difficult. The main challenge is how to create good user interface and user experience. Besides, the materials that will be displayed also have to be appropriate with the problem or the topic involved,” Firman said (07/11/18).
Currently, we still developing the project more and more until it is ready to use in schools.
DSC UAD has showcasing Firman’s project and the story in Bekraf Developer Day Yogyakarta that has been held on Saturday, 3 November 2018 in Sheraton Mustika Hotel Yogyakarta, we gathered some feedbacks there. We are also in process of planning the other showcases.
