Skin tone is one method of determining your ideal clothing colours. Skin tone is most accurately described in terms of both its top colour and its undertone, which can be warm, cool or neutral. Ideal colour selection of clothing to match or complement your skin type can facilitate a very appealing look. The colours we wear play a crucial role in whether we look bright, fresh or dull and washed-out. Some serious style points by giving colours outside our comfort zone a go, but finding hues that work with your complexion is often easier said than done — with such a kaleidoscopic spectrum of shades on offer, it’s no mean feat sorting the wheat from the chaff.

DUSKY SKIN TONE

The colour of your skin is perfectly positioned to marry well with the vast majority of hues and shades, as it doesn’t run the risk of being washed out like comparatively pale skin tones. Having a licence to wear bold, bright colours like jade green or cobalt blue is great but be mindful of adding balance to your outfit with a containing colour, which will hold the look together.

Cream is one of the colours that does fire up fair complexion but looks striking on dusky women. Cream is a light colour and looks great on the background of dark skin. Beige is again a very light English colour. While it looks all right on fair people, it looks significantly better on dusky women. Always wear Western outfits in beige colour. Reserve the bright colours for your Indian outfits.

Many of you might shy away from Cobalt blue, but you would be pleasantly surprised to know that it looks great on most Dusky skin tones. Golden and grey, Mustard yellow, Earthy green, Magenta, Maroon, Teal green — a very rare low-intensity shade of green will also suit you.

Colours to Avoid: Brown is pretty much a no-go. Much like how pastel shades wash out paler skin tones, brown won’t contrast clearly enough with your skin, resulting in your look ‘bleeding’ into your skin.

WHEATISH SKIN TONE

Most colours will work perfectly fine with a medium skin tone, you can ensure you look your best by opting for shades that are either a little brighter or darker than the middle ground. Olive-toned skin that tends to tan rather than toast in the sun, then you have what’s known as a ‘warm’ complexion which suits a much wider spectrum of colours than those with fair skin or ‘cool’ complexions.

Muted bright colours — Pastel hues like white, sky blue and soft pink bring out the best of your yellow undertones. Stark colours like fuchsia, tangerine and cobalt highlight facial features better. It is the primary colours that work for medium brown to wheatish skin. Choose pale beige rather than warm sand if you’re opting for light neutrals or try a bolder shade of purple (such as magenta) rather than mauve. With white being the obvious choice, try some subtle tonal dressing with a white linen shirt and a stone pair of chinos, which will accentuate your skin tone.

Different shades of green, white, pink and violet should be experimented with such complexions. The most suitable will be mustard and turquoise blue. A warm rich orange red colour theme will look perfect.

It is better to avoid bright and harsh blue, icy silver and dark pink since these shades will make you look dark. Avoid neons. Choose the colours that are warm, rich and spicy. Proper balancing of bright and muted colours is a must.

FAIR SKIN TONE

Fair women generally have peachy-pink undertones, which at times make their complexion look pale. Keep your look radiant and fresh with bright colours like pink, green and peach. If you’re fair skinned with cooler undertones, you look great in the berry family. Think strawberry or deep red, raspberry pink, boysenberry and deep purple. It creates a nice contrast with your skin and can bring out a hint of colour in your cheeks. Jewel tones can also really flatter your skin. Emerald, turquoise and amethyst as for metallics stay away from silver and stick with gold. Darker colours like grey, brown, burgundy, bottle green, navy and bolder shades of blue will all work well as these shades contrast with your skin tone.

Go for golden or copper shades the mixture of both can do miracles on you. Fair complexion then colour likes true red, dark pink, icy aqua and silver suits you the best. Such colours without sharpness can make you look pale. Even deeper colours like violet, blue and brown or a nude shift dress would complement your skin tone. Pastel hues and softer tones such as lilac and baby blue will work in most situations.

Colours to Avoid — You’ll want to avoid an abundance of soft, pastel shades or bright colours as they’ll only wash you out. This goes for neutrals too; rather than white, light beige and stone, choose richer shades such as sand, camel, khaki and slate grey. Red, though not best suited to the ruddier, rosy-cheeked pale person, can work for more alabaster pale skin tones when worn in bold shades like crimson.
