Now what…
After taking this one month course of programming for non-programmers, I feel like a have better understanding of how things work in the world of development. I had never realized how many aspects of development that there are. (It turns out that you can do more with computers than copy and paste lol) It was fascinating to me. Now, to decide what to focus on…since everything I learned was interesting to me. I never knew so much technology existed! (thanks to you and builtwith.com)
As far as back-end development, I would like to focus on learning Ruby. When I was researching the different languages, I felt that Ruby would be the best starting point. It seemed to be a simpler language for someone like me and one that is gaining popularity. So my plan is to take the onemonth.com Ruby on Rails course immediately. My goal is to be comfortable with coding in Ruby by the end of the year. This is my priority.
After that, I want to focus on learning more on the front-end languages of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This way, by next year I should really be able to see where my strength is , front or back end … or blogging.
I am also really interested in the UX facet of requirement gathering and IA. As a consumer or user, I often use a site and think , “ This would be so much better/easier if …”. I feel like this course has helped me be able to identify who the user is and what their needs are (case study/persona) ; then, in turn, know what a site needs and can achieve when using the correct technology. This is more of a interest than a necessity at this point, but, I feel like its really important to be well-rounded in knowledge of all of the aspects of the development process in order to put out a great product.
Many thanks to Chris at onemonth.com for explaining all of the tech terms in a clear and enjoyable way. I really like how you built upon our knowledge week by week to make these concepts easier to comprehend. That was exactly what I needed. So here’s to the next year and a half of learning and practicing!!!!
