For anyone new to web development, interning, looking to apply for Outreachy, or simply feeling stuck; this is for you. Hopefully my struggles will help you realise you’re not alone!

My Outreachy internship at Mozilla has been fantastic so far! I’m learning something new every day. My mentor and team have been really helpful and patient. But, after a magical first two weeks landing all of my patches, I hit week 3… and stalled.

One of the biggest challenges with the Mozilla code base is how intertwined Python 2 is with Python 3 in many of the components. Before a patch is landed at Mozilla, it undergoes a series of tests to ensure it is works with both Python 2 and 3 (if that’s the language your project uses), and is compatible across Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Sometimes a Python 2 versus Python 3 discrepancy might only be picked up by one of those operating systems. …
