Is the magnetic field necessary only for retaining the atmosphere? What about all kinds of radiation coming from the sun? Wouldn’t we be fried to a crisp, even with an atmosphere, but no magnetis field? I think the best solution would be to generate one. Somehow. Why did Mars lose its magnetic field in the first place? If it ever had one, comparable to Earth’s. And why or how has it retained these small localized magnetic fields here and there? Maybe if we knew the history of Mars’ magnetic field, we might think of a way to generate one….
