The date is December 23, 1991, and 23-year-old Cameron Todd Willingham has fallen asleep while caring for his three young daughters, two-year-old Amber Louise Kuykendall and one-year-old twins Karmen Diane Willingham and Kameron Marie Willingham. He’s exhausted and to keep them safe, he has put them in their room, each in their own crib while he takes a nap. Cameron’s wife, Stacy, is out shopping for Christmas presents at a thrift shop.

Cameron suddenly wakes up to the sound of his children crying, and one of his daughters yelling “Daddy! Daddy!” The whole house is full of thick smoke. Cameron says he runs to his daughter’s room immediately but is knocked down by how thick the smoke is. He is unable to reach any of his children so he runs out of the house to get help.

When he gets outside he is met by one of his neighbours, who has already called 911 to report the fire. The fire trucks arrive and they get to work immediately. Cameron was talking to one of the men about what had happened while the rest battled the flames.

One of the firemen then emerges out of the home holding Amber in his arms and Cameron runs to see her, and then tries to run back into the house for the other two girls. Two of the men on the scene had to hold him back and restrain him from going into the burning…
