#BringBackOurGirls: Photo Album of Then and Now

The second anniversary of #BringBackOurGirls is almost upon us.

And while I realize how disruptive it is to bring this up in the middle of serious stuff like nude selfies and the unrelenting tirades of crazy white men — it’s hard not to take a look back at how the symbol that represented sheer terror was modestly utilized.

Back in the spring of 2014 when Boko Haram became a household name and the missing Chibok girls were readily converted to the hashtag of the moment — social media melted into a frenzy.

The immediate need for celebrities and common folk to embrace the urgency of #BringBackOurGirls started out with earnest before it melded into a collage of selfish photo-ops and choreographed headshots that surpassed the dire fate of the schoolgirls.

It became a shit show that took flight and bore tentacles from the shores of Malibu to the opulent tents of the Cannes Film Festival.

Even supermodels couldn’t resist seductively posing with the sign of the times which in all honesty perfectly sums up exactly why we as humans have woefully failed to live up to the most basic of expectations.

The hashtag has pretty much flatlined but here’s a look back at how it flourished during it’s hey days.
