Where Was The Outrage When Former First Lady Michelle Obama Was Labeled “Ape in Heels?”
Sarah Sanders got off easy
The White House Correspondent’s Association Dinner 2018 — is over but not done with — based on the residue stemming from comedian Michelle Wolf’s delightfully scathing segment — which is still frosting timelines and outlets — as blindsided attendees with journalistic authority — seem to be bitterly divided in their stance over how White House Press Secretary — Sarah Sanders was treated.
Sanders was seated at the high table as she embodies the unenviable role of President Trump’s most trusted representative — since the cowardly lion was too busy roaring about the usual nonsense instead of taking the hits like the man he will never grow up to be.
For — the record — no stone was left unturned during Wolf’s magical offering — that showcased a rotating platter of appetizing venom to a room full of shit. From the scary creepiness of VP Mike Pence to the transparently vulture-like approach to “all-things Trump” by an industry that still professes its adherence to hard-hitting news that’s both cohesive and thorough — Wolf made sure to serve the bitter truth — potently unfiltered.
But — for some reason — it’s the shit about Sarah Sanders that has weirdly become the highlight of a night that was set up for her to take the brunt of the abuse — when you consider that she willing submitted to the task of making her bullish boss proud — by positioning herself to endure the punches he evidently won’t tolerate.
The stuff that was said about the bulldog of the White House Press Room wasn’t the worst of the night and despite the anguish from White women and White men over the brutal takedown of one of their own —that was particularly hard to take because of how her physical attributes were ridiculed in front of a crowd of beauties — the actual monologue wasn’t nearly as violent as its being portrayed.
“We are graced with Sarah’s presence tonight.” “Every time Sarah steps up to the podium, I get excited. I’m not really sure what we’re going to get, you know? A press briefing, a bunch of lies or divided into softball teams. It’s shirts and skins, and this time don’t be such a little bitch, Jim Acosta.”
“I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful.” “But she burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smokey eye. Like maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies.”
“And I’m never really sure what to call Sarah Huckabee Sanders, you know? Is it Sarah Sanders, is it Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is it Cousin Huckabee, is it Auntie Huckabee Sanders? What’s Uncle Tom but for white women who disappoint other white women? Oh, I know. Aunt Coulter.”
It’s hard to figure out how those jokes incited the pained responses from the likes of New York Times staple Maggie Haberman — MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski and NBC News veteran reporter — Andrea Mitchell — among others.
Luckily — there were some in the crowd who actually respected the worth of Wolf’s presence and delivery and managed to astutely sum up the series of events without the pollution of bias and the strain of elitism — that always seems to get in the way when notables gather together to break bread or bones.
The most jarring aspect of this shabbily-contrived controversy is how once-again — the center of attention is placed on the poor vulnerable White woman — the ever-worthy victim — whose pain has to be probed by other White women who can’t bear to witness the humiliation of their tribe.
There’s no consideration given to the fact that Sarah Sanders has proven without a doubt that she’s no ally to women — regardless of race or creed. She joins the list of women who are toiling for an administration that checks of all the boxes under the category of vile misconduct.
Any woman who is shamelessly proud to offer services to a man who endorses the activities of White supremacists — publicly applauds men who sexually molest children and beat their wives to a pulp — while bragging about his sexual conquests with sickening candor — deserves to be roasted until extra crispy.
Michelle Wolf performed as she should by dispelling an energy of discomfort that permeated through the air with bolts of lightening that hit where it hurt the most. In order to comprehend the magnitude of her success you have to think about how we accommodated the ugliness of the election — with cable networks like CNN setting us up for the present — by providing unnecessary hours-long coverage of candidate Trump’s jumbo jet parked on the tarmac — as a way to stroke the flames of doom.
But — as a Black woman — it was never comfortable or pleasant to live through the Obama years with the persistent range of insults that were directed at our First Lady — Michelle Obama.
From the moment she entered The White House — to the day The First Family gracefully made their exit — the disgusting name calling never ceased. As always — in her case — her Black features were under attack — as White men and White women with so-called enviable careers — were more than ready to risk it all for the joy of referring to the first lady as a primate on the loose with heels on.
“It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a Ape in heels.” This was courtesy of Pamela Ramsey Taylor, the former director of Clay County Development Corp.
Back in 2015 —former mayor of Airway Heights, Washington — Patrick Rushing gladly put his job on the line with his ill-fated posting on Facebook where he called the first lady — “Gorilla Face.”
Back in 2016 — former mayor Charles Wasko of West Pork, Pennsylvania thought it would be a swell idea to post a picture of a monkey as homage to Michelle Obama. He also included the First Family by posting an additional picture depicting orangutans with the caption: “moving day at the White House.”
There are plenty more to cite as examples of how Michelle Obama has been historically demeaned in the worst way imaginable — but it would be irresponsible to leave out the zinger of the bunch — courtesy of one-time Republican candidate for New York governor — Carl Paladino who delivered something straight out of a horror flick.
Paladino provided his answer to what he hoped would “go-away” in 2017 and his reply was the hope that “then-President Barack Obama would die of mad cow disease and then-First Lady Michelle Obama would “return to being a male” and be “let loose” in Zimbabwe to live with gorillas.”
Black women already have to contend with the global opinion that we are less-than desirable and not quite as lovable compared to our more viable counterparts — and even though the glaring reminders in pop culture and the industries that forecast trends are never-ending — it’s especially challenging to watch one of the most fascinating and accomplished women on the planet — get pummeled with dirt from White assholes who relish the honor.
But — where was the outrage for Michelle Obama?
There was no collective uproar from White feminists — demonstrating their disapproval at the thugs that were slinging poisonous bites at their first lady — by resorting to her looks as the preferred target.
So — forgive me if I have zero empathy for Sarah Sanders and her equally gross colleagues who have more than earned the right to be taken down a peg or two while they sit in their pricey ensembles and drown in their privilege.
When it comes to the press secretary — it’s her character that we can’t stand not the way she looks — and if White women are torn up about her “smokey eyes” than maybe that says more about their assessment of her attractiveness — which is clearly not positive.
This is also a prime example of how Black women are expected to stoically survive abusive situations with very little support while White women can’t even handle a very brief and minor discomfort — that pales in comparison to what their Black counterparts deal with on a daily basis — and in a very public way.
If Michelle Obama can still hold her head high after being called an “ape in heels” — then Sarah Sanders can make it through her harrowing ordeal that lasted less than five minutes.
Besides — anyone who answers to Donald Trump has no soul — so let’s dispense with the theatrics and get back to fucking ourselves up.
