“As someone who was a teenager in the 1970s when there was a real and sustained attempt to break down the socially constructed roles associated with gender I have been genuinely shocked by the reemergence of old established and I thought discredited ideas related to how men and women should dress and behave and the talk of such essentialist concepts as ‘lady brains’.”
Yes! I am so glad I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s.
I have to admit I fell for the “born in the wrong body” idea initially, but once I looked into it I realised it was the same old sexism wrapped in a nice progressive-seeming bow. The aggressive attempts to shut down discussion, especially by women, and the threats towards them for wanting an open debate, made me look into this movement a bit more and realise what was going on.
I feel most of the left will eventually wake up to this, but the question is, are “we” going to let them destroy our groups before then? How much progress will have been rolled back before we get to that point? How many demoralised and alienated potential activists.
You might like these blogs by marxists (not by me) on the subject. I hope it is ok to post them. It has been a relief for me to read them:
