Features should support outcomes, just as products do

A big outcome desired by a customer is made up of many smaller outcomes. These smaller outcomes are enabled by features. “I want to share my videos with the world.” That’s one of the big outcomes enabled by YouTube, the product. “I need to upload my video to YouTube easily.” That’s a smaller outcome that supports the big one, and so uploading videos is a feature of YouTube.

I find it valuable to think of every feature as a way to deliver an outcome to the user. If I can’t do that, it makes me wonder about the necessity of the feature, or my understanding of it.
