A dozen things I learned over the past year.

Exactly a year ago, I left my comfortable existence in Cambridge, Massachusetts to embark on a year-long travel adventure for my dissertation research. My first stop was Paris, then Tel Aviv, and finally Los Angeles. In retrospect, I suppose it was a bit like my version of “Eat, Pray, Love”, but if I had to choose verbs to describe the dominant feeling I had in each place, I would probably choose “Escape, Despair, and Renew.”

This summer marks my three-year “Veganiversary”. People often ask me why I became vegan. While I had been vegetarian since high school, it was never a central part of my identity. Skin is the largest organ and is incredibly prone not only to absorbing all sorts of chemicals and toxins, but also tellingly reflects our health and vitality. Health is clearly reflected in the vibrance and vitality of our skin, hair, nails, and so on. Beauty, then, is on the inside, but it also comes through on the outside via how we treat our body.

Dealing with the inevitable ups-and-downs of life using the ancient Buddhist meditation technique.

I have been “failing” at meditation for over a decade. I first discovered meditation at 17, when I began to experiment with alternative life approaches, including yoga, vegetarianism, and spirituality.
