I work about half of the time remotely. I used to work all the time on site in the same company. I work closely with UX people and project owners and I participate in making specifications. I don’t think working remotely have made a big difference in how I interact with my coworkers.

We spend a lot of time on the phone, working or just talking, and when I do show up I spend almost all my time in specifications and no time developing. When I’m home, I can focus on writing software without interruptions.

I think it’s worth trying one or two days per week of remote work. One day away shouldn’t have a big impact on your organization, but it will have a big impact on the employee’s daily life and satisfaction.

At the very least I’ve found we have a lot less tension and infighting when people are allowed to step back from time to time instead of being stuck together all the time.
