You are the average of 5 people around you

Jim Rohn famously said:

You are the average of 5 people you spend the most time with.

Let the above statement sink in. What it means is that, career switch is a life altering decision. And yet, most of us make that decision based on superficial factors such as location, compensation, brand value, role etc.

The most important factor that I see people missing out on, the deal breaker that very few consider, is the kind of people they would work with.

If you have a long term vision for yourself, one where you see yourself being happy to go to work everyday, getting better at your work, learning constantly, then make yourself a promise.

When you switch your job, you will make sure you get to work with people smarter than your previous organisation.

Ultimately the thing that motivates you, the thing that keeps you happy everyday isn’t going to be so much as the money you make, as it’s going to be about the intelligent people you get to work with and learn from.

I refuse to work with people who aren’t smart, hardworking, disciplined or passionate about what they do. This has helped me look forward to each day at work. This has helped me get better as an individual. The team I work with keeps me on my toes as I know that, if I don’t work hard and keep learning, they will refuse to work with me.

Look at all the successes in the world. You will realise it’s not because there was just one smart person in the team who made it possible. The entire team was fuckin’ smart which helped the company succeed.

The most prominent of examples that come to mind is the Paypal Mafia. Peter Thiel, Max Levchin, Elon Musk, David Sacks, Jawed Karim, Jeremy Stoppelman, Reid Hoffman and so many more. This wasn’t just a team. This was a council of Gods in the world of startups. If I could go back in time, I would take up ANY and I mean ANY fuckin’ work at Paypal, just to be able to work with these guys.

When you choose your next gig, ask yourself if you see glimpses of genius in the team. And if your heart and mind says yes, then shut the fuck up and join that team.

Choose to work with people smarter than you. Win!
