WHAT FAD OR QUICK DIETS DON’T WORK?
Quite often our weight crazed fancy leads us to gravitate towards fad diets as we want to lose weight, lose it fast and if someone promises that we can do that more or less effortlessly, why not!!
This is what is commonly called, fad diet(s) or food faddism. And they are very popular these days. Dieters are desperate and want a quick fix, diets offering miracle ingredients are a natural pull for them, but it does not work, at least in the long run.
The question that needs to answered is that how do we distinguish between a healthy diet plan and a fad diet? Well, for starters, be wary of any diet that rules out entire food groups or claims unrealistic weight loss claims. We need to understand revisit the very basic rule for survival, which states that we need to eat from a variety of food groups to get all the nutrients we need for the normal functioning of our body.
And that is exactly what does not happen with fad diet and Functional Exercise. We can lose weight on diets that focus on single foods (like cabbage soup or an exotic fruit promising guaranteed weight loss), but how much of the same thing can a person eat? Before long, we grow weary of eating the same foods every day, and cravings for our favourite foods charm us back to our former eating habits and the pounds which we lost initially, come back rushing and claim their spot in and on our bodies.
There are quite a few kinds of fad diets. Detox is one of them and may seem unnecessary as our body is a super machine with various organs to ensure effective disposal of waste and toxins produced by our bodies.
Fasting is a religious and cultural practice for us and is fine for a day but fasting for weight loss is always counterproductive. In fact, fasting leads your body to think that it is starving and it gets into a low metabolism mode but once you start eating the normal diet, your body does not readjust. This leads to consumption of more calories than your body needs, thus leading to weight gain. This is, in medical terminology called “yo-yo syndrome”.
What is more troubling is the fact that when we fast, the weight loss that happens is a combination of fat and fluid (and in some cases muscles). However, the weight regained will in all probability be fat only. Moreover, when we fast, we feel low, both on energy and at times morale. And we all know, when it comes to being fit we must not only looking the part, but should feel it too.
While there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to diet plans, it is vital for us to find a plan which fits with your lifestyle. An ideal diet plan should be flexible enough to suit your lifestyle and should encourage healthier eating by focus on three basic things:
Balance of nutrients needed — This is simply because getting too little of any vital nutrient may not cause an immediate problem. But if it’s lacking for an extended duration from your diet, you may find you have health problems.
Variety — Because we can’t be eating the same food for the rest of our lives!! If we persist, we may end up giving up on the whole thing all together and reach the starting point. Not only making the whole process futile, but also losing self-confidence and the zeal to take health seriously.
And, Moderation of your food intake — We all agree that the food portions have grown larger over the years. It is quite normal to find supersized meals these days or even the buffet culture that is prevalent these days. In a bid to try everything we end eating more than we need. And it can be avoided very easily.
