Project overview

Over the years, pets have evolved from being a strange and wonderful distraction to an integral part of families all over the world. As human populations have grown, so too have pet populations, and with so many pets on the planet, it’s fascinating to see just how this population is dispersed.

For all of those who own a pet might have faced real problems of getting their pets vaccinated on time, buying the right food and toys, evening walks, pet grooming, pet training, and a few more.

Time Taken: 2.5 months

Team size: 1

Tools Used: Figma

My role: Ideation, Brainstorming, Wireframing, Prototyping, UX Research, UI Design

Constraints: Remote Working, Pandemic situation, online user research.

What is PetMet?

PetMet is the one-stop destination for all the needs of your pets.
It is a startup that focuses on fulfilling all the needs that a pet owner comes across, be it consulting with a doctor, a groomer, a trainer, or online shopping for your pet!

In this project, I have explored how users follow all the above activities and how a one-stop-shop can be created for everything.

India is home to approximately two crore pet dogs. The value of food they consume is to the tune of ₹1,200 crore.
About 19 million other domestic pets are also currently kept in homes. Annually, about 6 lakh more are being adopted.

The Product Design Process

DISCOVERING THE PROBLEM

Assumptions

I looked upon the web and talked to people to get more knowledge about the problems faced while buying a pet.

  • Convincing parents to keep a pet at home is a challenge.
  • Taking care of pets is difficult.
  • People may not be aware of proper pet training.
  • People abandon their pets because their place of residence does not allow pets.
  • People face challenges in buying good food for pets.
  • Laziness strikes at the time of taking the dog out for an evening walk.

Research

Quantitative User Research (Online Survey)

To validate the assumptions and to understand the real concern in this pet world, I conducted Quantitative User Research(Online Survey)

To have a better understanding of our target user I was able to get the responses of approximately 400 people to:

  • Learn about the user’s background; help in creating a customized solution.
  • Understand the micro habits of the user related to the food they feed to their pets
  • Understand the current awareness of the user related to pet behaviors and their health issues.
  • Understand the exact problem a user faces.
  • Understand how they currently tackle these problems.
77% of people are the owners of the dog

As we can see, 76.9% of people out of 400 are the owners of a dog and very few people own a cat, with 8.1% birds, 3.1% fish, 6.9% rabbits, and only 0.2% hamsters, because dogs are loyal, they make us laugh, are incredibly clever, are so gosh darn cute, having a dog improves your health!

Survey Results

No matter what you’re going through, a pet will be by your side to help you through it. Companionship is the key reason most people wish to own a pet, they also think it the other way round i.e active lifestyle and fun!

Routine exercise can be hard for non-dog owners to commit to. However, as soon as you adopt a dog, you have another life who is depending on you to establish and maintain that routine. Pets provide social support by being our best friends. A lot of people feel that they can relate to their pets, and even have similar personalities.

On being asked where would you get your pet from, 36.5% preferred a Pet store whereas 18.3% and 20.6% wanted it from foster families and shelters respectively.
Some think that they can trust Breeders for correct info. about the pure breeds.

Analysis and Synthesis

I realized that some of my initial assumptions were correct. Some more details that I was able to figure through this survey:

  1. Convincing parents to keep a pet home was a real challenge faced by most users.
  2. Users are well aware of how to take care of pets.
  3. Timely grooming and training is taken care of by pet owners these days
  4. The real challenge is how and where from?
  5. 92% of people said to never abandon their pet whereas 5% were not sure if they will.
