Thanks for sharing your story, Beth! I’ve also experienced similar treatment from most of my doctors. After a prescription medication error during my final year at college, I began suffering from severe malabsorption, and my health rapidly deteriorated. Most doctors assumed that since I am young and female, I must have an eating disorder. Several years passed before a female physician finally diagnosed me with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. While we were constantly shuffled from doctor to doctor and unable to find any help, the cachexia continued to weaken my body, and I become dangerously emaciated. Medical neglect can have serious, life-threatening consequences, and the stereotype of female hysteria needs to be laid to rest. On a tangential note, perhaps artificial intelligence applications often outperform human doctors for diagnosis purposes since they are less prone to such demographical biases. I am encouraged to hear that you are in a better place now, and I wish you continued health and happiness! ❤
