Ocean eyes

There is such intensity in his look — eyes deep blue like the ocean, unreadable, mysterious and beautiful. What is behind those eyes? What are his hopes and dreams? What are his motivations?

He is a man of science guided by facts and logic, but the scientific mind intersects with the artistic one more often than not. He sees the world not just through his ocean eyes, but also through his camera lens. Does his camera lens see what his ocean eyes do not? His pictures reveal the secrets of physical spaces and showcase nature’s beauty, but for the most part, people are missing. Why does he prefer spectacular landscapes to complex human faces? Is he more comfortable with nature’s objects over human subjects? His pictures seem to say so.

He speaks volumes through pictures as well as words, but words delivered in front of others are a challenge. What is it about being in the spotlight that is so unnerving to most? I think it’s easier for him to be behind the camera lens, observing and recording than performing. His ocean eyes stare unblinking into the crowd, revealing an attractive vulnerability.

What does he see when he looks at me with his ocean eyes? Does he find me unreadable, mysterious and interesting? What would it be like to be in front of his camera lens? Would it reveal my secrets, my beauty? Would it reveal what his ocean eyes seem blind to?

He speaks through both words and images, of wanting to change — to be a better speaker, to be more organized, to be more productive. But his camera lens sees greatness, if his ocean eyes don’t quite. His camera lens sees his passion and someday he will follow it.

I want to find my passion, but I don’t have ocean eyes; I have practical brown ones. I'm a scientist as well, a scientist who acknowledges an artistic side sometimes, as one would pat a neighbour’s dog on the street. I write something, but this raindrop of creation rests on a leaf in a practical forest. I want to leave the forest and see the ocean, I tell myself. Someday I will look into his ocean eyes and tell him.
