Carbon Fiber is made up of long chains of carbon atoms to form molecules, which are also called graphite. The thickness of fibers varies in diameter, and their length depends upon their formation route. It is challenging, tight, and can withstand stress without strain. It is much stronger than steel and is more rigid and stiffer. The strands of the fibers make it stronger than steel fibers, composite fibers, and glass fibers.

Prepreg is a ready-to-use material for molding with a composition optimized for specific applications. The manufacturers can avoid the tedious process of storing resins, stiffeners, and reinforcements. Prepreg is the formation of a composite when the reinforcement of carbon fibers is impregnated in the matrix of polymer and is cured at high temperatures. Sometimes, it is formed by applying heat and pressure to make it hard. The laminated sheets can be staked over each other to create a laminated panel.

Some of the most critical factors of carbon fiber Prepreg, which can be altered to change the final properties of the Prepreg, are listed with descriptions as follows:

The hand lay-up method has a strength of 50% by the resin addition, and the remaining 50% is obtained by curing the composite. In carbon fibers, additional strength can be obtained by the curing temperature of the Prepreg. The resins and the polymers, when added to the fibers, will bind them properly.

Prepreg provides much cleaner and easier processing, from slicing to demolding. The prepreg cutting is simple and clean, easily creating precise layer shapes. This can be placed on a moldy surface. The stickiness to cover multiple layers of complex surfaces while handling a brush or squeegee. The features are no more mixing the plastic evenly, no more worrying about minimum working time, no more complicated plastic supply chain system, and no more spray adhesive will affect the finished surface of the product. The list is nearly endless regarding reducing labor hours, contact times, and efficiency in the composite manufacturing process.

The carbon fiber Prepreg tubes have a layered structure and are coiled up by joining both sides with a cylindrical symmetry. The unidirectional alignment of the fibers makes it strong with the matrix to bind properly. The smoothness of the Prepreg tubes makes them diverse for many applications. The high-temperature resistance of the tubes makes them withstand multiple environments in service life. The flexibility of the tubes with an excellent bending resistance of 180 degrees helps them to work easily like wires and can transfer fluids, if necessary, through them.

Thanks to the phenolic resin system, these pipes are highly fire-resistant and can survive short-term exposure to direct flame. After direct exposure to flame for a long time, the mechanical properties will be reduced, but the shape will remain the same. They have a specific wall thickness of 0.075". The tubes can be made specific according to the applications.

Another classification of the carbon fiber rolled wrapped tubes is that they are slightly bigger in diameter than simple tubes 0.25" (ID) — 2.5"(OD) with ranges of wall thickness. These can be formed by wrapping the unidirectional Prepreg sheets around a mandrel with multiple layers stacked to create the required wall thickness and heating at high temperatures to cure and fuse them. The benefits include improved machinability, reduced chipping, and decorative aesthetics associated with carbon fiber. All roll wraps feature a lightly spiral ribbed construction along their length where shrink tape has been used during the manufacturing process. If necessary, this can easily be sanded and polished.

With the mentioned excellent properties, manufacturing technologies, and working temperatures, these can be specifically utilized in aerospace applications to insulate the pressure at heights. These tubes have applications in beams and spars. The interior designs, due to their aesthetic appearance, support the frames of the mechanical equipment, direct the load, and tackle the stress because of their high modulus. The applications in car bodies, racing cars, formula F-5, etc. The recreational applications as roofs where the speed of air is high, around 50km/hr.

Disadvantages:

Some of the difficulties faced while preparing the Prepreg is the economics, as the resins, curing time with temperature effect, and the final removal will be a costly procedure. The storage of Prepreg for a long time is defined as its shelf life. The shelf life of the Prepreg is more than six months, but it can sometimes be more difficult to store due to the quality of resin, not proper curing, and less time of impregnation.
