But I just refuse to believe that the smartphone will be the be-all, end-all of mass-scale technology. The “what’s next” may not have been invented yet. Or maybe it is out there, just waiting to be chiseled and perfected to take it to such a scale.

Agree with you on this one. If we knew what would be next, we’d be building exactly that right now. However, rather like the smartphone itself, whatever comes next will be the culmination of evolution and confluence.

When I look at something like the Pebble Core, I can’t help but think the seeds of what’s next are buried in there: distributed, discreet, embedded, connected, invisible, cheap — all of the ingredients that help make something ubiquitous.
