Well the dudebro’s not going away until the following happens:
- Boys and men have a mechanism of gaining social status (and friends in general) that doesn’t require exhibiting effortless, cool dominance in whatever field they pursue.
- Computer Science becomes a universal, standardized subject in elementary, middle, and high school (just like math or history), ensuring that kids generally learn things at the same time and don’t feel a need to build up their skills rapidly in their free time in a hyper-competitive, hacky fashion. This style of learning favors boys, who are more likely to feel compelled by society and their own social circles to compete for knowledge and the sort of status tokens (especially in a seemingly down-n-dirty, cryptic area like computer science) that hustling to learn programming grants them.
