Crowdfunding: A viable solution to putting our dream projects to life

We are living at a point in time where inadequate funds is no longer an excuse for us not putting our plans to action. With the advent of crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, you can make your campaign for your project, and if it resonates with the people, receive the funds you need, and even more.

It’s amazing what one can achieve by properly articulating his/ her idea through the platforms, and get people to fund your project, from any part of the world!!! It sounds crazy that someone at the other side of the world, who has never seen you before, sending money to support you project. I mean, why would he/she do so?

Even though it sounds far-fetched and ridiculous, a large collective of innovators and entrepreneurs have used this methods to enable their ideas come to life. All they do is to upload the details regarding the product/ service plus the amount required, do some marketing/ awareness for it, and hopefully get some backers. People who back these projects are those who believe in the project, who are determined to ensure that your product sees the light of day.

However, it’s a give and take type of situation. As a Swahili saying goes, “Mkono mtupu haulambwi” or in English, “Bare hands cannot be licked”. Do not expect people to back your project if you’re not giving something inn return. Typically, in case of Kickstarter and Indiegogo, the kinds of rewards/ incentives vary depending on the amount of money donated. The higher the amount of money, the bigger and better the reward.

What fascinates me about crowdfunding is the opportunity to own a product that is not in the mass market. You are guaranteed to get a high quality, technologically advanced product, at an affordable price.

So what’s the catch?

All of these products have not been made yet/ are in the prototype stage. You cannot enter into a store to buy them. The money being fund raised is to finalize or fine tune the product in question. So, before receiving your item, exercise some patience. It may takes upwards of six months, but it is well worth it.

When I took time to browse through the items being made, I was amazed. It only goes to show what the human mind can come up, with no monetary restrictions.

I have taken it upon myself to highlight products that I feel are worth being backed, or generally are amazing to own, before everyone gets a hold of them.

On the next blog posts for each week, I will write about one or two products currently being backed. If you feel as though they are worth backing and eventually owning, don’t hesitate to send in your contribution.
