12 Months Changing My Life
Hi, I’m Nick John Wilson and I’m going to tell you about how my life changed in twelve months. I’ve been full-time in the music industry since about 2005. One evening in January 2016, after a gig, I made a conscious decision that things had to change if I wanted to achieve my end goal. That evening was my last local performance.
The catalyst was three months before in October, when I was offered the opportunity to spend the whole of 2016, working on a mountain. I was tempted. But, I knew that I needed to sort out what it is I want to do, find out who I am, what I am about, and what I want to become. I stayed in the UK.
I had already been aware of Bob Proctor and The Secret and life coach/guru Tony Robbins for a couple of years, but their teachings didn’t really sit right with me at the time. I knew I was still looking for something, but I didn’t know what. I was lost in my head and felt I was being held back by confidence issues.
When I was about 19, a friend and I were severely mugged and I never really dealt with the anxiety this caused, so in March 2016, I went to see hypnotist Tim Box. With Tim’s help, I learnt that the incident had been working subconsciously against me, along with being beaten up when I was a lot younger by the “big boys” and finally, this door was closed. Unknown to me though, was what was to emerge for me to deal with next.
In May, I reached my lowest point with a form of depression that I suspect had been affecting me for years. I began a mission to start again and find out who I am and what I am about. I didn’t go to a Doctor. Instead, I read some self-help books, trying to address my bad habits, negative thoughts and attitudes that were holding me back. I looked into cognitive behavioural therapy, neuro-linguistic programming and money awareness.
The biggest challenge has been changing my core belief system from a negative one to a positive one. The trick is to recognise when you begin a negative thought process and to consciously change it to a positive one. This is definitely a skill that takes practice.
This has lead me to a huge lifestyle change, moving positively to health, fitness, diet and all round putting my well-being first.
In September 2016, I discovered Gary Vaynerchuk, who has documented so much valuable information about marketing, business, branding and elements of understanding oneself. His content has helped hugely in opening my mind to a more positive and productive work ethic and has been the kick up the arse needed. On November 9th 2016, I managed to snap a selfie with him in London and thanked him in person for this push. I totally fan zoned, but it was worth it.
So, here is where I am right now, December 2016:
I have changed my relationship with money and now have a better understanding of how to manage my finances. I am no longer turning to gambling for a quick fix of escapism to change my life. I feel I have a much better understanding of who I am and what I want to achieve. I am grateful for my family and most importantly my parents, for teaching me the fundamentals to be able to further develop my knowledge as a human being. I am happier every day and that is the key no matter what you do.
So, what’s to come?
Well, I am now offering my services as a producer to help guide other artists with their career via Quill Tip Audio and New Acoustic Folk Records. I am looking into more film based ventures; such as acting, voice acting, writing and recording. To fulfil my love of the outdoors, I am now a snowboarding instructor at my local slope and will be looking to attain a globally recognised qualification.
My huge focus for the next few years is a fictional book about Stonehenge, English folklore and English Heritage, which I would like to make available as a storybook, audio book and a film (hopefully!). There will also be a music album that tells the story, too. It’s gonna be one of the most epic things I do in my life and I’m real excited about it.
With all of this in mind, I am not quite out of the woods, but I know that I am 100% in a better state of mind than I was twelve, six, three, even one month ago and equipped mentally to deal with life’s daily challenges. I am at a crucial point now in my career and life and I felt that I just wanted to let you guys know what I’ve been up to and also to say thank you for sticking around and supporting me through this journey. It would be great to hear from you on social media — all my links are on my website. Thanks for reading, watching and listening. See you soon.
