Everyone wants to be David saving the world, no one wants to be the one needing saving

Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes. It began early in life with Hardy Boys mysteries and the Chronicles of Narnia. When we read fiction, we transport ourselves to a different time or place and imagine ourselves inside the story. When I would read about the Hardy Boys, I imagined I was right there with them solving the crimes, either as a third brother or as a friend like Chet. When I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, I imagined I was one of the Pevensie children fighting wolves and witches.

It’s very human to place…

It’s Book Launch Day!

Every once in awhile, an idea strikes and it won’t leave you alone until you do something about it. For Drew Doss and myself, that idea was The Smelly Gospel.

In the Fall of 2016, Drew and I were in our second year of seminary at Logsdon Seminary in Abilene, TX (R.I.P.). Drew came to me with an interesting Greek word, Anthrakian, which means ‘charcoal fire.’ It pops up twice in John, first when Peter denies Jesus beside a charcoal fire, and second when the post-resurrection Jesus cooks breakfast on the beach for Peter and some other disciples.

What really…

This interesting Greek word invites us to consider our relationship with Jesus.

Several years ago, my friend Drew pointed out an interesting thing he discovered in the book of John. There is a Greek word that occurs only twice in the New Testament, and both times it happens in John. The word is ἀνθρακιὰν and it means “a heap of burning coals” or “charcoal fire.” Drew pointed out that both times this word showed up, Simon Peter was right there beside the charcoal fire.

In my mind, the words “charcoal fire” ignite a variety of memories in my mind, from bonfires and s’mores with friends in a backyard to deep conversations around…

Aaron is a guide and a warning to modern pastors.

Photo by Tyler Nix on Unsplash

Ask any pastor who their favorite pastor in the Bible is and their answers will form a sort of hall of fame of biblical pastors. I would expect to see Paul, Peter, and John listed high on the list. Throw in some Old Testament guys like Samuel, Moses, Elijah (yeah, I know, they were prophets) and maybe a more obscure New Testament pastor like Timothy or Titus and there’s your list.

Based on the title of this story, you must know where I am going with this. …

Welcome to Anthrakian! We are a publication dedicated to the idea that God is doing big things in our world today and we want to be part of it.

How we can apply the Year of Jubilee to 2020

Photo by Jason Dent on Unsplash

The Year of Jubilee is one of the more revolutionary ideas found within the entire Old Testament. Specifically, it is found within the Book of Leviticus, a book detailing what it means to be God’s people living in God’s land. What application can we find today for this revolutionary command?

What is the Year of Jubilee?

The Year of Jubilee is found in Leviticus 25. The Year of Jubilee was commanded to happen every 50th year (seven weeks of seven years, which add up to 49 years). “Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. …

We’ve all met THAT person

Writing groups on Facebook are fantastic. I belong to several and each has helped me in some way to become a better and more consistent writer. Hearing success stories, best practices, tips, and encouragement on a daily basis in these groups has been wonderful for me. I have learned so much!

There are some people in these groups who just make you want to pull out your hair. Here are twelve I have met. You have probably met some of them too.
