The Story of Chai — Part II: How Imperial India was Whipped into Growing Tea for the Raj

A very interesting subject. I look forward to hearing how this system was adapted for the Post-colonial world of India. Much of it sounds like Jim Crow (and the new Jim Crow where prisons are now the new form of slavery) in America. And as we all know, such systems usually don’t change over night.

I have to ask: how does all this play into both the class/caste aspect already playing out in India. And how does it play into the famines caused by British rule?

On the former subject I just read a great article by Tarik Ali in the. London Review of Books

Definitely worth a read as it looks into other aspects of injustice there in India.

I look forward to reading your next piece on this.
