Tetra Fish is the well-known name of many tiny freshwater characiform fishes. Tetras come from Africa, Central America, and South America, relating to the biological family Characidae and its former subfamilies Alestidae (the “African tetras”) and Lebiasinidae.

The Characidae are differentiated from other fish by the appearance of a small adipose fin within the dorsal and caudal fins. Many of these, such as the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi), are vividly coloured and easy to keep in captivity. Consequently, they are very popular for home aquariums.
