This is wonderful. The constant and self-righteous charge of “cultural appropriation” running rampant over the countryside drives me crazy.
The idea of cultural appropriation has, on occasion, seemed reasonable, particularly when one group has taken the rituals and beliefs of another and mis-stated or represented them to the world. Sacredness should, at the very least, not be exploited or misrepresented, and people who respect each other can be expected to care enough not to insult other people and cultures.
When casting a movie or a play, I think using authentic actors is a good idea. I think using authentic memes is a good idea.
When it comes to other types of cultural sharing — fashion, cuisine, architecture, and more— NOT appropriating other cultures seems to be the more bigoted attitude. I love the mix and how we come to appreciate each other when we share how others think and do things.
This article is way cool.
