Byakuya Togami, a student at Hope’s Peak Academy’s class of 78th and is a participant in The Killing School Life featured in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. His name”Ultimate Affluent Progeny.
Personality Byakuya Togami
Byakuya Togami is an unassuming and self-centered individual who is extremely shy. He has no interest in cooperating with others because of his self-centered sense of superiority and the belief that other people generally inferior to him. This belief in superiority and a black-and-white view of the world comes because of his childhood; Byakuya had to prove his worth by fighting his siblings to gain his place in the family as the heir-apparent while his siblings who failed in the battle were exiled from their families and financially cut off, being deemed “unfit for the name of Togami”. Since Byakuya had been brought up in high-stakes competition with “haves” and “have-nots” and believes that everyone should are focused on themselves, and is dismissive of emotional connections as unimportant and trivial according to the words of his father:
“You’re not about to claim she wouldn’t kill a close friend, are you? You still don’t get it, do you? The game we’re playing here isn’t so kind. Honeyed words like friendship don’t matter here. What matters is outwitting the opponent, defeating them… Not a person alive would sacrifice themselves for another. In the end, we’re all in it for ourselves.”
Because of his absence of emotional bonds with students, Byakuya was able to mentally distance himself from the terrors associated with The Killing School Life, and consequently proved to be one of the most skilled and knowledgeable investigators in the class due to his superior intelligence.
His intense competition led him to see this Killing School Life as simply an exercise, one which he sincerely hoped to win, just like it was his victory to become the leader of the Togami family, to the displeasure of other students. A prime example of this occurred following Chihiro Fujisaki’s death. Chihiro Fujisaki. In this instance, he placed Chihiro’s body in a frame in order to frame Toko Fukawa to “make things more interesting” while interpreting Chihiro’s body as dead. Chihiro as “an object”.
However, Byakuya’s detachment from emotion as well as her lack of compassion for the other members of his group caused it to be very challenging for him comprehend the reason why people act altruistically or out of pure emotion. It was evident in the circumstances surrounding Sakura Ogami’s passing, when it was difficult for him to comprehend why anyone would want to risk her life in order to save their loved ones, or the reason Aoi Asahina was willing to risk her and other lives of others to honor the memory of Sakura.
The detachment could cause him to focus on suspects in red herrings, and take them on because he couldn’t imagine an emotion-driven motive. Sakura’s story was an important turning point in Byakuya’s perspective on the Killing School Life, going from treating all other students as enemies in the game to focusing his efforts on finding and eliminating the Mastermind:
“Sakura and Hina were both willing to sacrifice their own lives to deny the reality of the game. Thanks to them, it would appear the others have cast aside their fear for this game. There’s no point in participating in a game which has lost that sense of excitement. Which is why I will no longer be participating in it. Now I have only one thing to look forward to. And that is to heap the harshest possible punishment onto the one who thinks they can control me!”
While maintaining his cold and dismissive attitude towards other people, Killing School Life did appear to change his perspective and made him more considerate and cooperative with other people but he still claims the fact that they’re his acquaintances. While initially being drawn to Despair after Junko informed him of the entire Togami family and the company being destroyed, he appeared especially affected by Makoto’s constant search for hope and an improved future for all although Makoto was able to deny it in his face.
He smiled a rare smile during Danganronpa the second Episode in which he was struck by Makoto during the last trial, declaring the fact that “hope keeps on going” and agreed that Makoto and him were working together toward the same goal, which was to end the battle of Despair against Hope. From that point he made use of his wealth and power to largely support Makoto in their common cause and in particular, helping help to save and restore those who were Remnants of Despair, as despite their terroristic acts, the victims who survived that Killing School Life were uniquely capable of relating to their experiences of being in the grip of Despair.
He also was instrumental in The Final Killing Game, coming to Makoto’s aid, and securing his life as well as bringing in his own troops to assist in the defense of the survivors. The kind and thoughtful actions, even at the risk of his reputation, which is his essential value — could be out of character for him prior to the incidents that took place in The Killing Game, but show the impact the events he’s experienced and the people he’s come across have been on his character.
The newfound appreciation for other people did not seem to be extending to Toko Fukawa However. Toko and her alter-ego Genocide Jack was able to develop an unnatural obsession and attraction to Byakuya soon after having met the man, and began to stalk him and call his name the name of her “Master”. The feelings she felt were not reciprocated and, in actual the actual fact Byakuya found herself disgusted with her especially her inability to bathed. Byakuya usually hid from his peers by slamming them, but this inclination in fact attracted Toko more, openly inviting him to insult her and make her feel inferior and seeing it as an “lover’s quarrel”, which caused him to be unable to shake her off.
His behavior towards Toko revealed his manipulative nature and he took advantage of the obsession of Toko in order to force her perform a menial task for him, and having zero regard for her, that he revealed his identity as Genocide Jack in front of Makoto and the other survivors almost when she confessed her secrets to him with confidence. Contrary to others, Genocide Jack’s perception of her was not a change following his involvement in the Killing School Life ended, however, he appeared to be more indifferent to her than aggressive.
Even after Toko assisted in rescuing Byakuya from the clutches of from The Warriors of Hope during the Demon Hunting game, when she informs Komaru she believes that “Master and I are rock solid. Even if we’re far apart, our feelings towards each other will never change” He responds to her lie by telling her “Yes you’re right. That’s what you said. Even if we’re not together but my feelings of resentment towards you will not change”. But, talking about the incident with Makoto He acknowledges that the two of them owe him a debt Toko and Komaru for saving his life.
